Natural Fabrics

Leah Weinstein Designs are made with natural and organic fabrics, including 100% cotton, 100% organic cotton, 100% silk, organic cotton batting, wool batting and 100% cotton thread.

Organic Cotton + Natural Dyes

The organic quilt collection is made with organic cotton, dyed naturally using traditional, non-toxic, organic plants and minerals. No heavy metals or chemicals are used. The fabric has been bleached naturally with sunlight and grass- no chlorine bleach is used in the process. The local dyes include: onion skins, apple twigs, bark + leaves, juniper shoots, oak leaves, sumac leaves, iron and alum. The imported organic fabrics are dyed by master craftspeople in India, dyed with: indigo leaves, madder root, cutechu, turmeric, myraballam, pomegranate rind, onion skins, iron, and alum. The imported organic cotton is fair trade and certified 100% organic. For more information on the fabric, visit: www.tenfoldorganic.com

Process

All fabrics are pre-washed and pre-shrunk. After piecing, applique, or hand painting, the quilt is then loaded onto a hand guided, free-motion quilting machine. As the stitching design is "drawn" free hand into the quilt, the piece is quilted together, making each quilt a one of a kind creation. After quilting, the edges are trimmed, and the binding sewn on to complete the quilt. For quilts intended as wall hangings, a loop is hand stitched to the back for a dowell or bamboo pole to loop through.

About Leah

Leah Weinstein received her Diploma in Fine Art from Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design in 2001, and her BFA in 2008. After making her first quilt in 2001, quilts quickly became the focus of her work.

Between seasons of school and treeplanting for a living, Leah spent time traveling throughout Africa, Asia, and India. During her travels, she became fascinated with the incredible beauty of handcrafted textiles. Leah's travels eventually became her self-directed textile studies, which led her to study natural dyes and organic cotton in India with the company she co-founded, Tenfold Organic Textiles

Leah now lives in Nelson BC Canada, where she makes quilts and quilted wearables. Leah teaches quilting workshops around BC.

Quilt Care
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Tumble dry on low or medium heat. Do not bleach or dryclean. Avoid direct sunlight. Natural dyes may fade gently with time.
